Rural short-term rentals take the lead in Germany for summer 2026

Almost 68 percent of summer Airbnb bookings in Germany were in rural areas, according to the company’s internal data.

A similar trend was seen with the experiences booked through Airbnb in Germany, with more than 40 percent in the Nature & Outdoor category.

The next most popular categories were History & Culture followed by Food & Drink, with 31 percent and 20 percent of the bookings, respectively. This makes nature and outdoor experiences the single most popular experience type in Germany for summer 2026.

“The latest data from Airbnb in Germany fits with a trend that we have seen across Europe for several years: people vacationing in nature and demand for outdoor destinations growing,” says Lars Schäfer, Managing Partner at Glamping Advisors.

“Whether traveling domestically or international, guests are increasingly looking to get out of the city, and short-term outdoor hospitality can offer that,” he adds.

The domestic destinations whose popularity among Germans has grown the most between summer 2025 and 2026, according to Airbnb search queries, are:

  1. Hohwacht, Schleswig-Holstein
  2. Dreieich, Hesse
  3. Scharbeutz, Schleswig-Holstein
  4. Traunstein, Bavaria
  5. Plau am See, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern
  6. Düsseldorf, North Rhine-Westphalia
  7. Markkleeberg, Saxony
  8. Möhnesee , North Rhine-Westphalia
  9. Sierksdorf, Schleswig-Holstein
  10. Thale, Saxony-Anhalt

Three of these (Hohwacht, Scharbeutz and Sierksdorf) are on the Baltic Sea, while others offer gateways to popular outdoor destinations such as the Chiemgau region, Bode Valley, and the Leipzig New Lake District.

Of the top ten German travel destinations that saw the biggest increase in popularity, Düsseldorf is the only city with more than 100,000 inhabitants.

“That so many of the top German travel destinations this summer are outdoor-oriented shows the strong demand for this type of travel,” says Schäfer.

“I think there is a good chance that next year we will see even more.”
